This dobro is over 30 years old and has served me well over the years, including a nationwide tour as my featured instrument and an appearance on NPR's Whad'Ya Know.
I don't recall all the details but I believe it's one of 2 prototypes built by Randy Collier in the late 80s for a business venture he and Mike Auldridge were planning to pursue. That venture never made it past the prototype stage but this instrument belonged to Mike for some time, who sold it to Nancy Fox in the DC area. I bought it from Nancy in the late 90s.
The neck and body have numerous scratches and some slight checking on top. Part of the binding has come loose at the high end of the neck and you can also see some other binding flaws in the photos.
Nevertheless, the guitar plays just fine and has a nice punchy tone. It's equipped with a passive McIntyre pickup which still functions perfectly. It was given a professional set-up about 10 years ago by Joe Mattingly in FL. The cone and nut were replaced and Joe made other improvements to enhance tone and volume. The ebony bridge was replaced sometime after that. It would benefit from another pro set-up in the near future just to fix any slight rattles or buzzing.
The case is somewhat damaged at the top but still does what it's supposed to do. The guitar also came with an unfinished 6-string neck that was intended to be interchangeable with the 8-string neck.
This is a well-built and great-sounding 8-string dobro that won't break the bank. I'm asking $600 and would prefer a local pickup (willing to drive 2-3 hours to meet), but can ship if necessary and split the cost.
