I recently changed strings on a Shobud Maverick and the b pedal copedent on the 6th string is sharp - going from G# to A# plus some. It's more than a whole step difference. The third string (same pedal) is right on at a half step. I've heard that string gauges can cause this. Does anyone know if this is so and if I should be replacing with a higher or a lower gauge string?
Many thanks in advance. John |

95% likely you replaced a wound 6th string with a plain one. You need to put a .020w or .022w back on there or you need to retune the pedal which, unless you know how, is not the best option. If you do know how, go for it. |

Did you go from a wound 6th string to a plain 6th string? This could produce the effect you're seeing. The wound requires more travel because the core is very thin.
Typical string 6 on a lot of commercial E9 sets is unwound .020plain. Or sometimes .022plain. If you have a micrometer or caliper, measure the gauge of the old string if you have it. Any change can indeed require adjustment of the leverages. If you don't have it but know it was a wound, I'd start with a .024 or .022 wound and see what you get. |

I drop my 6th string from a G# to an F#.
On some models of pedal steels this change could only be done with a plain string.

Thanks so much John and Dave, I will try a wound 22 today and see where that takes me. Retuning the pedal might be a little out of my ken at this point. Erv, that's an interesting tuning variation, it changes the degree of variation for the pedal - bringing it to up to a minor third. Could do some outside stuff with that. Thanks so much to all, John |
