Got one you love to recommend?
We're looking to buy a new wireless printer/scanner/copier for home use, preferably one with pretty fast print speed that won't break the bank every time we have to feed it more ink and won't disconnect itself from the wireless router every time we finish a print job (some do that! Arrgh!), and doesn't make a racket. Is that too much to ask? Got one you love? Tell me about it!

The Epson line of multifunctions are ink (only) and are good quality unlike many others. They are even built on a metal frame not just all plastic. They have optional waterproof permanent inks too. Their scanners and associated software are good too. Even medical services (I service them) are using them instead of Lasers which are expensive to run and not very enviro friendly either.

Kodak is out of the printer business. Part of their bankruptcy.
If you ever want to print labels on CD/DVD's, an Epson is the only way to go. Certain models of Epson print directly on ink jet printable discs. Most Epson's have multiple ink cartridges, thus only the color that runs out needs to be changed, unlike some that have one cartridge for all the colors.
Ink is not cheap, regardless of the brand. People swear by refilling or non vendor "remanufactured" ink cartridges. From my own experience they either do not work well, have less ink than a OEM cartridge, not work (not recognized) or cause print head clogs. |

In my work I deal with these horrible things - printers that is - all the time. Heaven forbid ever being married to one!
Re the inks. There is always disagreements over non genuine inks. Here is what I have found after rescuing all the different brands and types.
Good quality non gen inks (G&G are one of them) work OK provided they are used within the instructions of the unreadable fine print on them - always Store below 25 degrees Centigrade and do not leave standing for long periods. Forget about re-filling the tanks yourself - not worth it. They may effect the warrantee on the printer. I use them (only G&G) all the time in Epsons and have no problems provided you adhere to those conditions. Pretty hard to keep the temperature one at times! I clean the heads each month. Genuine inks are better for photos but they are where the printer profits are generated.
Canons and HP inkjets use a slightly different technology (used to call it bubble jet) than the piezio heater in the Epsons and are more fussy IMHO and experience. Brothers (now) are just cheapo.
Refilling lasers is pretty "iffy" in my experience (forget it) but once again there are a few good quality non gens around but a lot more rubbish ones.
So it's really an owner decision which way to go.

Jim I have found all the inkjet printers I've tried are a pain. Ink needs replaced too often. What I have settled into is an HP Laser Jet (CP1025nw) color printer and a stand alone scanner. Kind of a pain to copy though because you have to scan and then print it. I think the extra money for a laser is worth it. It doesn't smear when you want to highlight it, like an inkjet, and it prints faster.

I have a Brother such as Grace suggests and it's ideal for light home use, but it seems to eat up colour cartridges although I mostly print in monochrome.
I no longer print multiple copies so I don't really need a laser, but I'm inclined to go back to one.

I use a Brother monochrome laser printer with a scan bed. I've had mine about two years and love it. It is VERY quiet and always available to smartphones, tablets and computers over the home wi-fi network. I've posted some more thoughts here: https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=375106

I have a refurbished Brother Laser Printer that I bought 20 years ago at Fry's Electronics for 90 dollars. Fry's is gone, but the printer still works great. This printer has never given me a problem. It is an "office printer" as compared to a home or consumer printer. A few years later I added a wireless module that plugged in to the printers USB port and a port on my router. All still working great, from Windows XP to 7 to 10, and hopefully 11 when I finally upgrade. IMHO, you can't go wrong with a Brother Laser Printer. They last. A friend of mine bought a stand alone consumer model about 10 years ago and his is still working great. IF you don't need color, stay away from ink jet printers. I have had a couple over the years, including a Brother, and they do not seem to last. And, the ink is costly compared to toner for a laser printer.

I ended up buying an Epson Ecotank ET-4750. Haven't installed it yet though as I'm still limping along ok with my previous HP Office Pro 8600 until it gives up the ghost (or just runs out of ink). Then the Epson is waiting in the wings.

Jim, I've owned 2 Xerox laser printers for years, love most everything about them EXCEPT the painful price of toner. But mine have been absolutely trouble-free, and their Concierge service provides free repairs and service for as long as you own it, you just need to have the printer send printer supply info to the company.
My current model is the WorkCentre 6605-DN, copies from glass, very fast printing single or double sided, auto sheet loading scanner, duplex printing, prints from USB stick converting documents to PDF, wireless printing.
I'd love to find a brand that's as reliable with much cheaper consumables, but not having any hassles with a printer is just about worth it.
