I am picking up an 81' MSA Super Sustain Vintage XL next week and I am wondering if anyone can identify this pickup? It has no MSA Super Sustain markings and the guitar doesn't appear to have much wear so I doubt the markings wore off. Anyway, I am just curious and won't have it in my possession until next week. Thanks

Mike it looks to me like a Wallace True Tone single coil to me. But I could be wrong.

That is not a TrueTone; as Jerry's top plate was never that wide or that thin; as you can see from the pic my late friend Jerry Wallace made for this MSA and you can see jerry has a white edge around two tops molded together for thicker top plate.

That pickup in your XL to me; still Does look exactly like a SuperSustain pickup maybe logo never put on; or painted over??And you can tell from the sound if it's a SuperSustain; cause they sound very clear and in your face GREAT.

Awesome Ricky. "in your face GREAT " works for me. I was kinda wondering as I didn't see the distinct white/black color separations of the plies.

I see the error of my ways now. I had a TrueTone years back but I sold it. In the photo I mistook the edge of the top plate for a white band. The pole pieces are like TrueTone which is what headed me in that direction. Sorry for the misinformation. As usual you can rely on Ricky Davis to get to the bottom of all things pedal steel.

Except for the logo, it looks very similar to the SuperSustain II pickup on my 1980 Vintage XL.

I doubt speculation is going to help you much, but the pole pieces and the white around them look very similar to Mullen, but their top plate is 3 ply w/b/w as I recall. The other similarity is Williams but his pole pieces were jeweled.

No Worries Bill; I see and read and learn just like Mike said; and we all do. Sometimes there are steel guitar things we see and immediately makes our finger go to head in scratch position and many times we never get to find out "what"....ha...LOL.
