Does anyone have a source for the lower return springs for a push pull? Also, for the small springs behind the rod collars?

Try Lynn Stafford. I believe he has a source for the positive return springs.

Dose a push pull need return springs on strings that don’t lower? I don’t think so.

I think I purchased a couple from Lynn Stafford a while back. They are special springs and you can't just get them from a hardware store.

I am having the springs quoted at a few companies right now. Lynn is in the middle of a move at the moment. Not sure if I'll have the springs before Lynn gets done with his move.

It's been years since I ordered springs but these are the part numbers from MSC. The lower return springs require an extra length of wire. I would confirm that the MSC specs still match the PP springs.

Lower springs 06979686
Pedal springs 01290170
Shock springs 06979223

Sorry, I thought everyone was asking about the return springs. like this.

I have a 75 D10 and a 76 loafer and every return spring just looks so tired and wonky. The D10 looked like it hadn't been played in years and almost every return spring was too loose.

Abe, do you know what the compression rate is on that spring you linked to? Harder or softer than Emmons OE kicker/compression springs?

I've Been making a few by hand out of music wire on my lathe for different compression rates, but they don't look so pretty.....

I have ordered them for Ron Jr from Century Spring. It is also where I get the improved varied tension replacement return springs for Fender 400/1000s. For the Emmons springs, I dropped some off on my way to the Desert, and on my return, I picked up a box of them -- different lengths with finished ends. I have no clue the model numbers. i just asked for exact duplicates of the samples I gave them.
The original springs may have been supplied through Dexco, which is in Burlington.
Visiting a Century Spring is worth it for the displays alone. It is like visiting an insect museum with every insect known to man on display.
You know what they say -- after worldwide nuclear destruction, the only things that will survive are cockroaches and springs.

Patrick Timmons,
I have the return springs now if you need some.

Chris,
That’s interesting, I’ll check out Century, not having to cut springs would be nice!

Thanks Kelcey. I need 30 just for my rigs. Waiting on bids from 2 places I have worked with at the day job and the last place Lynn got them from. Depending on price break, I was planning on ordering 200 to 500 pc.

Chris, what is the improved return spring for Fender 400? I wound up making my own for 2 or 3 strings out of spring stock. What a great sounding guitar!

Thanks for the numbers Jerry. the shock springs look pretty darn close to the originals (mid 70s' Emmons).I ordered some and a couple of different pedal return springs that had different spring rates.

Bobby Bowman liked a spring 3/4 long and .022 wire or so behind the collars. They make the pull easier

Why the same length behind collars? Each rod is different. Some meet a couple turns of spring some more. I cannot think of more than one change that would need a full 3/4inch spring. Extra spring makes a guitar simpler to set up but mushy. Extra spring masks imprecision.

Yes cutting them to various lengths is the secret, sorry I was not more clear.

Harbor Freight has a box of assorted springs that should have the right size for the rods. I have a spring winding machine. If there is enough demand, I might consider duplicating springs.

Billy Knowles at Steel Guitar East or ol' Clem Schmitz should have them.
