G’day Guys and Gals
Would like to know string recommendations (including gauges) for stringing a B6 Panda to open G (GBDGBD). I already own a squareneck dobro in this tuning and inspired by Megan Lovell I would like to tune to this chord.
The panda will be new to me and I am concerned about string tension with the Bakelite. Megan (of Larkin Poe ) says she currently uses an Ernie Ball redial steel set with a 13 or 14 as the high D.
Any B6 Panda owners who could lend a hand.
Cheers

Hey Hoss,
I have a set of these GHS Open E tuning strings on my B6 panda and they work well. I like a heavier string on the high D so I have a 15 there.
Here's a link to the strings:

When I bought my Rick B6 it came with this set of strings and I've been curious about the tuning these steels were originally set up to. Anyone know?
The link below is for John Ely's string tension page with a lot of valuable info:

I basically use a Dobro set, although I’ve gone down a little on the wound gauges, so 16 18 24 34 42 54. Anything less than 54 on the low G is too floppy, but higher (I’ve tried 58 ) is dead sounding.
I’ve been meaning to try a 13 set like Megan, just to see if I’d like lighter plain strings, but I saw on an Ernie Ball site that she uses a custom set. I’ve never found something that says what all the gauges are. _________________ Peter

Hi Michael,
please look into the John Ely string gauges page and write down the recommended string gauges, I would tend to use the heaviest suggestion since the B6 is rather short scale.
For the G bassstring he recommends up to 048, so the Jazz medium set with it's 056 is definitely too heavy.
Check out the available string sets and look which one lines up best with the recommended string gauges, I would focus on the 3 bass strings. The top strings you can buy as singles, they are normally rather cheap, like $1 per string. This is the approach I follow for all my steel guitars, playing Hibass A and C#min I never found a full sets that fit my needs perfectly. _________________ https://hawaiian-steel-guitar.com |

What gauges did you settle on, and how are you liking your B6? _________________ Current Tunings:
