Does it seem reasonable that the tone capacitor being a bit too close to one of the pull rods was causing a hum? For the heck of it, I moved the tone capacitor just a bit to allow for a little more clearance between one of the rods that was close to it but directly impacting it and just like that the hum is mostly gone? Maybe I inadvertently affected the grounding in the process but something sure helped!

I would suspect a cold solder joint first. They are not always easy to see. If it comes back flow a little solder into the solder joints. That should fix it.
