Is that a light at the end of the tunnel?

Starting this Friday I have a couple of new bookings, after a few months of no gigs at all!

So I figured I should start running through some songs to make sure I remember all the words, chords and licks.

Well I did stumble on a few lyrics, and most of the chords came back to me, but most surprising of all was I found myself playing many new licks - some really good- that I had never tried in that particular song.

I then realized while I was performing familiar tunes 4 or 5 times a week, I was often just "Phone-ing" it in" (playing the same old tired licks and melody lines I had played 100 times before)

By taking an extended break, I found a fresh new start, approaching each song in a new way. Of course some signature hooks and famous licks need to be there in certain tunes, because they are an integral part of the song. But all the fills during the verses can be fresh and interesting!

Ok back to the woodshed now, with some Razz lyric cheat sheets in hand. I having fun improvising and even adding some new songs to my set list for Friday...

Played the gig this afternoon (It had been 74 days since my last performance) It went great!

I had been rehearsing for it thru the week, and I was relaxed, in good voice, and playing some new stuff pretty well.

I feel like I had a better handle on the balance between vocals and steel guitar licks, so that my focus on either was unfettered.

I even played instrumental verses and choruses when I usually sang, and vice versa. (Singing when I had usually taken a solo)

Lastly I let the background tracks do their job a bit more. I kicked up the volume and punched the bass. (It really helped that the Venue had great acoustics)

The crowd was small because it was the first time they had live entertainment in 2 months. But They also set up an IPAD in front of me to ZOOM (broadcast to all the other residents in the dining room and other buildings) I made it a point to make "eye contact" with the remote audience as well as the folks in the lobby. Laughing
