I recorded a demo of this Horace Silver tune (Nica’s Dream) last night with Sol’s post-war B6. The guitar has a very distinct tone and is a pleasure to play, although it’s going to take a little getting used to for me. Also, I’ll have to work on recording it and getting the best sound.

Excellent Mike, I really like what you are doing. You are using the lap steel to make music which is totally free from the cliches that are normally attached to the instrument. Your musical choices are exceptional. I am also kind of drawn to this stripped down approach on this recording also....Loved it!

fine playing! in the solo section i hear some compressor/limiter "snap" in the attack. is that a function of the sound of the ric guitar?

Bill, there is a slight compression but what you may be hearing is delay. I had about 26 ms of delay and mixed the wet sound louder than the dry for the solo. It reminds me of tracking with latency.

And thanks everyone. You know doing a record like this may be in the cards. It’s not really what I wanted at this time, but the most popular track I recorded on Steelonious was done in my studio with uke, bass, steel and later vibes from a remote studio. I can see myself doing it again but like I said it’s not really where My head is at. That will change once I make a decision though. I definitely plan on having some great guest soloists and they might dig this format too.

The solo is very clean in technical terms yet notes also sing out. Are you mostly pick blocking, Mike?

Andy, I guess I do a lot of blocking, mostly pick, but I also keep the bar moving a lot and I try to keep it off of the strings that I’m not playing. I’ve never had the benefit of really watching someone else play, so I practice doing whatever works for me to play the way I hear without all the artifacts. It drives me nuts when I can hear notes bleeding in. But improvising is tricky on steel and I think the only way to have success with it is to practice a ton and try to develop an approach of your own.

Impressive, cool and surprising. Really liked it (and I guess Pannonica de Koenigswarter would have enjoyed this too). The Rickenbacker sounds great!

Well played. I love how that melody sits on the MinorMaj7 sounds. Not unlike Chelsea Bridge in a way.

I guess Sol Hoopi didn't record a version of this...
