I've owned 3 of them and they all had 12AX7 tubes. |

Early versions of the Black Box used an ECC82 tube, which is the European name for a 12AU7. That's a lower gain tube than a 12AX7.
I can't comment on which brand 12AU7 is the best. Send a message to Brad Sarno. He is very helpful. _________________ It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. |

Any new ECC82 / 12AU7 should work fine. Some of the online tube sellers will try to describe the tonal differences between different versions of popular tubes. You won’t find many varieties of the 12AU7 |

In general, the 12 A*7 family of tubes can be interchanged, mainly differing in the amount of gain. A lot of folks switch out 12 AU7s for AX7s etc. in guitar amps to take advantage of their differences in gain.
In the Black Box, I don't think there will be as much noticeable difference from brand to brand as there would be in a preamp stage since it's mainly functioning as a load/impedance matching device.
I'd try different tubes of the same family to see if one suits you better than another, but in my Black Boxes (later models), the difference between new Chinese or Russian 12 AX7s and primo old Amperex Bugle Boys has been pretty negligible. I'm running a Russian tube in mine and saving the Bugle Boys for applications where I can hear the difference.

Mike.
In the early Black Boxes with the 12AU7 (or ECC82) we like to find tubes that DON'T have a "spiral filament". Many new tubes do. Most any 12AU7 will work fine, but the ones with spiral filaments are a bit more prone to failure.
Best,
Brad |

Good selection and range of prices at https://www.tubesandmore.com/search/node/12AU7 . If it doesn't mention a spiral filament, it probably doesn't have one, but you can inquire, they have their phone & email listed. _________________ Long-time guitar player, now wrestling with lap steel. |
