Dale, try this. I've used it for years and it's free.

Audacity will also do it, and give you some neat editing tools.

Thanks Scott, I have the Audacity program but it won't allow me to convert wave to mp3. I forget right now what comes up when I try to do that. I will get back and maybe you can tell me what I need to do to get Audacity to convert. It will allow me to export as a wave file, just not to a mp3. Thanks for your reply. Dale

I use WavePad by NCH Software. I have an old version - the new one won't save to mp3. Is there some commercial reason why some do and some don't?

Dale,

Audacity uses a free MP3 encoder called lame. Audacity for Windows and Audacity for Mac have it built-in per the Audacity manual: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/faq_installing_the_lame_mp3_encoder.html

The latest version of Audacity is v2.4.2. Older versions did not have the lame encoder built-in. You can check what version of Audacity you have by navigating to "Help" > "About". You can download the latest version from here: https://www.audacityteam.org/

Dale, I did a search to see if I could find some instructions for you, but didn't really find anything. I can't help you, as I run Audacity on Linux Mint.

Thanks Scott, Carl's suggestion works for me. I've just always wondered why I couldn't export songs as mp3 with Audacity. Now I know why. Thanks to all. Dale

Hi Carl, I have Audacity 1.2.6. I now run Win 8.1. I also had it on a desk top with win XP. Was unable to export as mp3 on that computer also. If I understand properly, it's because I did/do not have lame. It seems that I need lame for windows XP and 8.1. Thanks so much for taking the time. Dale

Dale,

I'm glad you found a solution that works for you.

Just so you'll know, V2.4.2 Audacity should work with Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. They say if you have trouble getting it to work, let them know on the Audacity forum and they will help you to trouble shoot and get it going.

https://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Audacity_Versions#compatibility
https://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Windows_8_OS

I was surprised to learn Windows XP is supported all the way up to v2.1.3 and even Windows 98 can use V2.0.0.

Dale,

I'm glad you got 2.4.2 working. Audacity is hard to beat. It does a lot of audio things really well.

Carl,

Thanks for the tip about Pazera. I had not heard of that utility program. It looks like it can be a great program to have in my audio toolbox.

Also, thanks for following up and making sure all is well. I assumed all is well but it is much better to ask the question and know for sure than to just assume everything is working as expected.

Not sure if you have found what you are looking for yet Dale but if not then try this. I have been using this program for several years and I love it. It's free but it stays updated as well. Robert
