Howdy! 100% total newbie question here - but I'm looking for some advice on a problem with a used Carter Starter I just bought - my first steel - and what I should do about it.

Links to pictures below for reference. Here's my problem: the LKL only pulls when it's extended wayyy far to the left. From what I can tell, the lever is pretty worn down/a little bent - but I'm wondering if perhaps it was just installed wrong?

It looks like whoever set this up drilled an extra hole outside the bracket for the screw that stops the lever. Is that my problem? Should I put that screw back inside the bracket? Perhaps I just need a new lever?

Would very much appreciate any advice y'all can offer. From reading back on an older thread, it sounds like these levers are known to be pretty fragile. Just not sure what's my best option for just getting the LKL functional.

Thanks!!

Hey Travis, Wecome to the wacky world of pedal steel!

Looking at your pictures.... The knee lever stop screw is original and in the original location. The wear on the end of the lever may be causing it to slip past the screw head.

It looks like your knee lever is modified with some metal cut away, and I cannot tell how (or if) the lever is hitting the stop screw. The bell crank is bent and that will also affect how the lever meets the stop screw. All of this is fix-able. You can replace the screw with a larger flat head one.

How long are you knee levers? They look pretty long in the first picture. Originals are around 6 inches end-to-end.

The picture shows how the knee lever top should align with the stop screw. They should not need to move much to raise the Es.

The knee lever is not the original knee lever for sure.
The knee lever bel crank is bent bad and it looks like it is not hitting the stop screw.
Get the bel crank straight and it will help a lot. Be sure once it is straight the knee lever is hitting the stop screw when engaged.
Also the adjustment at the changer may be out of adjustment. You may have to use the nylon tuning nut to take some of the slack up in the pull rod.
Hope this helps.

Sorry for the delay but - thanks folks, this all helps! Everything y'all both said makes sense. Messed with it some more and yea, the lever is basically just hitting the stop screw, but then slipping off the edge of it because of the wear/the bend. Think I'll try another screw for starters.
