Hey,
Sorry if this is dumb, but I'd rather ask first, before making trouble for myself.
Just got a nice (used) GFI Ultra D-10. Rather than the stock high G setup, it now has a D on top. That's cool. I'm liking it and will PROBABLY stick with it. But I have a bunch of experience on non-pedal 8 string C6 with a high G, and I'd like to mess around with that of the GFI.
Should I have to do any adjustment changes (other than tuning the 1/2 step pedal 5 raise) if I throw an .11 on there and tune it to G? Vice-versa?
Thanks! |

Don't see why. Surprisingly, a 0.011" does actually tune down to D quite satisfactorily. Altering your tuning on a per-song basis is legal in most states. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

I started on lap steel (many years ago) and when I got a Pedal Steel in 1969 the high G was still in style and fit my playing. I've tried the D several times over the years but lose licks and keep going back to the G.
Standard Nashville C6th High G sets use a .012 string for the first string. I've tuned this down to D and it still sounds OK. No pedal change with a D.
From other threads on the G/D subject it looks like I'm one of the few holdouts for the G. At 83 I'm not going to change now. Herby Wallace was one of the few "big name" pros that also had the G. |

P5 with lever that raise string 7 and 3 to C# would give a full (non-pedal) A6 tuning on the inside strings D F# A C# E F# A C# E D with same interval relationship as the A C E G A C E G (which now would be found a 3rd fret)
The both C's to C# kinda works well on P4 if one doesnt like the standard both A's to B normally found on P4
I like the D on 1st string as it give me some very comfortable RH fingerings for certain melody patterns.
Your melodies and musical ideas might feel the need for a high G on the 1st string instead.

I suspect that the idea of a re-entrant top string was imported from the E9 tuning, possibly by Buddy Emmons -
his Basic C6 tutor is written for it.
As with all these things, it all depends on what actual music you're planning to play _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

I like Herby Wallace's C6th material.
He still had a G for the top string.

I put a .013 on the first string. It will tune up to the G ok and still be heavy enough to tune down for the D when needed. I also backed the tuning nut all the way off. Trying to raise that .013 any more may be a little too much. |

Thanks all. I don't have calipers so I can't check for sure, but I think this has a G string that was tuned down to D. It felt a little at D, and tuned right up G, no problem.
Sounds great! |
