Toggle switch left.........e9 neck
Toggle switch right........c6 neck
Toggle switch center........? Signal from both necks with a decrease in volume. E9 neck sounds as if it is now single coil only. I’m hoping this is the case.
What was the original purpose of the middle position in a Carter D10 with these pu’s? _________________ Carter D-10, Magnatone MOTS, Fender SFTR, Fender TMTR, LTD 400 |

Not just Carter. That's the way most D10s are wired. Some players like to play a tune using both necks and sometimes the thinner sound of a neck lends itself to a particular sound that a player might want.
It's not a coil split though. You would need a separate switch and wiring for the 705 only to do that.
The middle position essentially divides the impedance of both pickups...
Perhaps someone else can offer a more technical explanation, but the bottom line is that with the switch in the middle position, ea. pickup has a thinner sound as you have discovered. |

Thanks Jerry.....that makes sense.
I traded a 6 string for this guitar some years back. I lived in Austin, TX area and he in Amarillo. We decided to meet in Wichita Falls and make the trade in the whataburger parking lot right off of highway 287. My best whataburger visit ever!!! I was so excited to get a psg that the drive seemed like nothing. Just couldn’t drive fast enough on the way home to set it up and try it out.
The Carter manual just says front position for e9, back for C6, but no mention of the middle, I like that middle position sound but wondered how it worked. IMO works well with my setup for some early west coast sounds. Now, time to keep practicing!!! _________________ Carter D-10, Magnatone MOTS, Fender SFTR, Fender TMTR, LTD 400

You're welcome. I use that middle position rarely, but on some things I like it. I never thought of this before, but with the 2 different pickups like you have there, might make for an interesting tone combining them with the middle position.
I know what you mean about the excitement. When I got my first steel, it changed my life drastically. The day I got it, I took off work the rest of the day and didn't really want to go back the next day.
I've driven a few hundred miles to do deals but never that far. That must be better than 600-700 miles round trip.
BTW, I looked up some of your previous posts and found the link to the Golden Bear CD. Nice work. Enjoyed it a lot. |

I think the round trip was around 575 miles but I was so excited about the trade that I didn’t notice. Just glad I made it home in one piece. My mind was all psg!!
Thanks again for your reply and also for giving the Golden Bear stuff a listen. I recall I was using both necks as mentioned in your first post on one track. The baritone guitar part in CB Working was me faking it on the C6 neck.
