Anyone know of any National Tricones modified for 7 string? I've picked one up(From the classifieds), and the work seems to be pretty well done. I'm curious if anyone might know who might of done such a thing, or played such a set up!
It's an interesting one for sure... |

Are we talking about an original (pre-War) National? I'm pretty sure the current National Resophonic company will do 7-strings by custom order, but I agree that a pre-War 7-string tricone is probably a modification. That said, never say never with National!
Got any pics, especially of the headstock? |

Prewar 1929 with a Grover pancake banjo tuner ( seems 20s/30s era). I’ll post pics shortly |

A few ! Such a lovely instrument , thinking about putting the national slimline pickup on it. Trying to sell my cat can for it. |

I really like the idea! I will try it on my cheap Republic Tricone! |

Nice. I had my eye on that one. It's the only 7 string prewar tri cone I've seen. Pretty cool. I was curious what it'd be like with the extra string tension. Do you have C6/A7 tuning on it? |

Right now I've got it tuned to GBDEGBD I am going to switch it up soon though.
What do you mean by extra string tension? applying to the end piece?
I'm about to replace that, found a 7 string end piece going to swap them out, and then add the national slimline pickup to it.

on the 7th string it's pretty interesting, i restrung it with some GHS strings last friday, and what was hard was getting the middle/ 7th string in tune, had to mess around the banjo tuner nut a bit(not used to banjo tuners at all).
I'm curious to how much it affects the neck with an extra string in the middle. The guy from national guitar repairs, he redid the nut and saddle in 2013, I'm wondering if that's helped.
And still super wondering who the hell was using it and got it modded to 7 string! |

I meant extra string tension on the cones. You should check out Jerry Byrd's 7 string C6/A7 tuning. I can only imagine that's what was intended. |

gotcha, but how would the string tension cause tension on the cones? Sorry asking because I'm a complete amateur at this.
I was going to get this down to a 6 string, but luckily found out national made some customs and i've got a 7 string end piece coming!
next step to install the slimline national pickup...and not make it ugly. |
