Hi
I'm a newbie here in this forum and have a question (I think more questions will come later) :
I bought a wonderful Sho-Bud Lloyd Green Model in perfect working and optical condition some years ago. The guy who sold it gave me two more pickups as a gift.
Can anyone here tell me what kind of pickups they are? I find nothing about a brand.
Thanks a lot

The one in the guitar is a Telonics; the next one is a Bill Lawrence, probably a 705. The last one is a Sho-Bud pickup that is likely the original from your steel. |

Correct,, all GOOD stuff there, I would ditch the Telonics myself, and put the Bud back in, but I just love the traditional sound of a good old Bud single coil... Some don't... The BL is a great choice as well. See all those wires??.. By adding a DPDT mini switch, you can get 3 distinct sounds. Full humbucker, front single coil which is a more traditional "Bud" sound, and rear single coil which sounds very much to my ears like a 60's Fender 800 or 400.. Thats what I am using on my old Marlen S10... Really good sound all unique in all 3 switch positions..
All 3 pickups you showed are a great choice, but the BL pickups that can have the coils individually activated are something very special that few steel players these days utilize.... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!
no gear list for me.. you don't have the time...... |

Thanks a lot.
I think that the former owner of the instrument changed the original single coil pickup because it didn't work. I have to check it.
Does anyone know what the colours of the Bill Lawrence pickup mean and how the wiring of a mini switch has to be made (I'm no specialist in electronics)?

#1 is a Tonealigner, not a Telonics. The split case (vs. the Telonics's one-piece) is the tell.

Jon,
Yes, you beat me to it.
It's a Tonealigner.

See https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=285879 for the wiring colors.
The switch wiring depends on what you want to do. With two coils, options include series humbucker (standard), parallel humbucker (still hum-cancelling but sounds a bit more like a single coil), and split to one coil or the other (not hum-cancelling.) I'll look around for diagrams for these unless someone else has them handy. _________________ Long-time guitar player, now wrestling with lap steel. |

Yeah, agree on the Tonealigner in pic #1.
Pic #2 is a Bill Lawrence of some type as already stated, but there are 3 different models of these chrome surround BLs and they have very different monetary volumes you should know if you would ever want to sell it.
The 705 being the most sought after and most valuable.
The info on these is in this forum entry: [The DC resistance or ohm value can be measured with any ordinary volt/ohm meter.]

The first number of the x05 series indicated different impedances and resistances running from lowest to the highest. lower numbers tend to be brighter while higher numbers tend to be mellower.
705 - approximately 18K-21K Ohms, 15H inductance
805 - approximately 26K Ohms, 21H inductance
605 - approximately 15K Ohms, 11H inductance
505 - approximately 12K Ohms, 7.5H inductance
This numbering system does not hold true for the modern Lawrence pickups (710, 716, 910, etc.) The first number indicates construction and the second two numbers indicate impedance in Henrys. |
And, oh yeah...welcome to the forum and congratulations on your LDG! |

I found the wiring diagram. Scroll down to the post by Bruce Derr, he includes all the switching options I mentioned. https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=275792
If you don't want the split coil option, just omit the upper switch (SPST/SPDT). _________________ Long-time guitar player, now wrestling with lap steel. |

Thanks a lot. It has about 20 K Ohms, so it seems to be the 705. But I won't sell it.
The LDG is a really wonderful Instrument. I sold my former steel, an expensive german WBS when I found the LDG occasionally. For a ridiculous price!
I paid only about 1250,- $ including the pickups, a Peavey Session 400 and an original Show-Bud volume pedal. The seller had another LDG. He had cancer and wanted to reduce things and was glad to find a new owner who will appreciate it.
I have been sooooo happy and I am still. |
