I'm trying to figure out what Mr. McAuliffe is playing behind the fiddle/sax rides from about 51 seconds onward. I realize he wasn't playing a C6 or E9 neck but can someone lead my in the right direction?

So far on C6 neck I'm hearing 4th fret, strings 1234(no pedals) to 7th fret, strings 2345 with the 5th pedal down. From there, I don't know. As you may surmise, my knowledge of the C6 neck is very limited!!! Man, I love the way he blasts it out like a horn part.

I'd say you're on the right lines, Scott. It sounds as though you tune your first string to G.

The chord progression is E6, A9, E6, B9, E6 with the B note on top throughout. I don't know how to get a ninth chord with the root on top, so I settle for plain 7th!

I'm no expert, but I suspect that McAuliffe was using an A6 tuning and the best way to replicate that voicing is by playing at the 7th fret on the E9 with pedals down.

So it goes 4567, up to 10th 5678 with Es lowered (equivalent to P5) and back again. This is a voicing you can blast!
For the B chord I go to 12th and play a straight B7 with the B pedal and Es lowered. If I think of anything smarter I'll let you know Smile
