Researching really old Gibson Lap steel for Widow

The guitar was owned by a very close friend that recently passed away. I've been playing pedal steel for 30 years but lap steels are a bit of a mystery. I'm researching it for the widow. Any info as far as make, Model, Year, Value would be greatly appreciated. I also need assistance finding the serial number. I didn't want to randomly disassemble.

It's a first generation Gibson Royaltone circa 1950-1952. Gibson did not stamp serial numbers on lap steels until after the original Les Paul models were introduced circa 1953. Value would depend on whether the fragile Plexiglas bridge/pickup cover ("fingerrest" in Gibson parlance) is intact, and the presence or absence of an original case. About 600 were produced.
