My wife recently bought me an Epiphone Electar Lap Steel and I'm not sure if the following is a feature or a bug:
The volume knob goes from off to full volume turning the knob from 0 to 3. 4 to 10 is then all just full volume. The tone pot works as expected, but only with the volume knob at 10, if you turn the volume down, it then rolls off any tone adjustment.
We emailed the store, who said they believe this is intentional and intended to recreate the electronics of the original 30s instrument it is inspired by. Seems weird to me to make it intentionally broken by modern standards, especially while putting a big modern humbucker on it, but this is my first lap steel, maybe that's what people want.
However, I then checked out some YouTube reviews and unboxings to see if anyone had commented on this and saw a couple who seemed to have fully functioning volume knobs.
We emailed the store again and this time were told it was just' idiosyncrasies' of the pots used on some batches. The store have said they're going to speak to Gibson, but any input on this would be greatly appreciated |

Although you should not have to perform surgery on a brand-new instrument, switching out volume pots is not rocket science. Might as well install a top-quality tone pot, tone cap, and jack while you're at it.
Asian imports often maintain a low price-point by using the cheapest fittings and components available. That's why so many budget-priced imported lap steels are assembled using generic Tele-style bridges and pickups, and the flimsiest tuning machines imaginable. |

If the tone pot only works with the volume at 10, then I'm pretty sure that it is miss-wired. It should not be too hard to fix if you have a soldering iron. _________________ "To live outside the law you must be honest." (Bob Dylan) |

Yeah, I'm okay with a soldering iron, but you're right, feels like I shouldn't have to on a band new instrument |
