Several years ago Jeff Newman recommended that all players in bands should tune up 2 1/2 Hertz above 440 just to be in tune with the band. Would those who do so, please post to explain how this has worked out for them. Also, did any of you do this because you discovered that your guitar detuned you E strings that much when you pressed your A and B pedals? ...Tom

I do this as this is what is now programmed into the Peterson tuners.
But I also did it before there was such a thing as Peterson for steel.

When I used to tune my E's to 440 and everything else from there, I was flat with the band.

I think the reasoning is because if you use a tempered tuning, so many of the notes are flat from 440 (like a piano).

If you tune "straight up", then I would think that you would NOT tune your E's above 440.

Done it for years, found out by trial and error, never owned a peterson...Because we tune our pedalled tones and knee's flatter than straight up, it helps to tune to 443 (it's not for cab drop) it's for the pedalled tones ala strings 5 and 6 being pulled up less than straight up. This only matters with open strings because you are playing by ear and sight with bar. Hope your doing good Tom, i haven't bought anything off you for a while, i'm overdue!. Smile

I used Jeff's compensated tuning with the Boss TU-12 needle tuner for many years. I now use the Peterson tuner with the sweetened U-12 preset. I think it's a very nice utility tuning and it works for me.

I tried it when I first started playing 4 years ago, on the suggestion of my guitar builder. I often found myself being out of tune with the band I was in. Sometimes it was due to rookie pilot error, but other times I was pretty sure it was not.

When I wised up and checked to see if AB was dropping my E’s 12 cents, I discovered they were only dropping about 5 or 6. Back to the drawing board!

A friend suggested tuning the open strings to 440 with just the B pedal down. Then check back with all the 3rds and make sure they’re about 4c or 5c flat. This has worked out pretty well, even when notes that were tuned as 3rds have to serve as roots or 5ths.

Until I found Jeff's tuning I always had to play just a bit sharp. Quite a relief! Winking
