I've done this years back, but I've forgotten. Recommendations for string sets, gauges appreciated for round neck open D tuned guitars. One is an old Kay archtop and the other is an asian import acoustic dreadnaught flat top.

I'm putting a raised nut on these for lap style playing and don't want to damage the neck with too much tension.

I know there are some tension charts around for individual strings, but I know some of you have set up standard guitars like mine to use in open D and may have suggestions for what works best.

They'll be used mostly for blues and rock tunes situations where I don't want to use my squareneck spiders or maybe switch back and forth with different tunings or just another sound.

Try medium gage acoustic strings 0.013-0.056, same as I'd use for bottleneck D and G on acoustic guitar. If the first string feels too light, change to 0.014. Dobro strings for square neck would be 0.016 and up, probably too much pull on a round neck.

Thanks D. 13's are about the same as a G dobro set except for string 1. I was wondering if a lighter set might be better for a round neck. Still, it's a slacker tuning....hmmm...definitely a consideration.

I second the regular acoustic mediums for open D.
