This isn't a one-off. I don't know how many were made, but they do come up occasionally. According to Gruhn production started in 1940.

They made 10 strings to order. The neck is cast because there was too much tension for the regular bakelite necks. If I remember it was as early as the 30’s. I’ve never heard of any association with Eddie Alkire.

Nonetheless, it is very interesting to see a studio photograph of Eddie Alkire with a 10-string Rickenbacker, presumably before his association with Epiphone. It raises the question of a possible business relationship with Rickenbacker.

I owned one of these years ago. I purchased at a Guitar Center for $800 but the pickup wasn’t working. i sent it to Lollar who rewound it. I didn’t care for the instrument very much. It was very neck-heavy and oddly the nut was cut almost for two different tunings, or at least re-entrant strings on the bottom, if I recall correctly. Looked cool, though.
