My niece inherited this strang looking Alvarez 9 string acoustic guitar. I was wondering if there was ever a formal tuning for it, or basically like the top on a 12 string? S'pose to be worth approximately $400 To $500.
I thought at first it was one of them there Frankenstein geetars or whatever you guys call'em. But this was a for real produced instrument...... why?

I would buy a set of strings for 12-string guitar an wind them up. The octave strings for E, A and D are of no use for this 9 string guitar Roger McGuinn had one of those, but it was made by Martin.
What many don't know about stringing up a twelfe string, that the octave strings are set above the normal gauge (so in a downstroke) YOU'LL HIT THE HIGHER STRING FIRST.
I know this because I once had a Rickenbacer 360/12 and it was strung up that way from the manufactury.
In this case you will only need the octave for G. B and E are in unison.

Rickenbacker's are actually backwards relative to most 12 strings - part of their unique sound.
Reading that linked article, it seems this one would have NO octave strings, the G is doubled just like the B and E. Of course, you can do it any way you want.
Might be really interesting hi-strung...

That's a neat guitar. You see that with 'ukuleles too, 6 string ones that only have two of the strings in double courses.
I think in this case you'd get a nice "chimey" top end to chords like a 12 string but have a slightly easier playability on the low strings.
