Cross-posted to the Facebook LSL group. Hope that's OK:
I recently acquired a mid-50s Supro with the string-through pickup. Identical to the National Chicagoan except for the peghead badge and color of the MOTS. The tone pot on mine needs to be replaced. I've read that they used both 1MA and 500KA pots (with a .05uF cap). I can't easily measure mine due to a damaged wafer (even after dissecting the pot). I'm inclined to use a 1M to favor the brighter end, but I don't really want all of the adjustability compressed into the first 10% of rotation. If need be, I can always add external tapering resistors.
What do you all think? 500K or 1M? Linear or Audio?
(PS: the original pot had the wiper internally grounded to the case. If only it were that easy! That's not the issue here.)
Thanks.

Couldn't you just buy one of each and see which one sounds best to you? _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Run a par of jumper leads out from hot and ground and then you can easily play around with pot and cap values and extra resistors till you get what sounds good to you _________________ Duesenberg Fairytale

Yeah, of course, and that's probably the route I'll go. I just wanted to know what some folks have experienced, while keeping it original-ish. I have zero experience with this kind of pickup, so I don't know what to expect tonally.
Thanks. |
