I have been playing PSG for 20+ years on and off. So I know a few things but with so many breaks for up to years in between I am still at best an intermediate player.

With the loss of several bands and few venues due to Covid I find myself at home not wanting to even sit behind the steel.

So I saw a thread about the Georgeboards Rogue conversion kit. I setup my old Artisan lap to a 22.5 scale and dropped in a new GFS "56" 6.4k Flat Pole pickup.

I've been playing a Universal 12 and done a good amount of C6 swing stuff. But just concentrating on 6 strings and using various tunings has opened up my understanding. I wish now I would have started on a 6 or 8 string lap. I would have a far better grasp of a pedal steel than I have now.

When I decide to go back to PSG I expect I'll be a much better player. IF anyone I meet ask me for advice on learning steel guitar I'm going to tell them to start with a 6 string non pedal.

Ollin, due to the costs, I started on lap steel then dobro. Even after 30 years of pedal steel I still use bar moves I learned on lap steel. I believe it an excellent choice for variety and dexterity. Plus it makes you think about how to get to the next phrase. Not only that but the change in sound is refreshing.

I started on 6 string lap. Switched to pedal as soon as I could afford it. (around 1983) Back to playing mostly 8 string non pedal now. Western Swing, Old Country and some Jazz type stuff. I have several students that come in wanting to learn pedal. I alway make them spend a few months (or more) on the lap steel first. I have found that it gives them a much better grasp of the pedal steel. Bar technique, using the right hand, blocking, finger picks, intonation etc. All without worrying about the pedals.
