"Just unearthed a November 1945 issue of the "Platter Chatter" record-biz magazine as published in Seattle. It featured this bit about a fellow who they exposed for impersonating the steel guitar great, Lani McIntire. I wonder if 75 years later now, this group can ID the culprit from his photo?"

Only the wacky world of steel guitar would have a fake Hawaiian steeler on a musical crime spree!

Wow! That’s amazing. That scam wouldn’t last 10 minutes in today’s world of instant communication.

Reminds me of all the con artists who claimed to be the Russian duchess Anastasia Romanova who was killed with her family by a group of Bolsheviks in 1918.

This was a common thing in entertainment back then. I recall reading there were a number of Ella Fitzgerald's, and many soul singers all booking gigs under the star's names.

Ah, the days when it paid to impersonate a Hawaiian music band leader.

I can see how this sort of impersonation would have been easier back then. Good thing Platter Chatter was on the case!

A variation of it goes on yet today. You have no idea how many people I've met in bars that wrote "He Stopped Loving Her Today."

I had a guy walk in to the club we were playing and on the next break came and sit down at our table.
He asked if we would let him sing a number or two.
Then he casually mentioned that he wrote Hearbreak Hotel. Of course I was a little skeptical of tbat.
But we had him up and he did two numbers. Not too bad either.
Turned out his name was Tommy Durden and he along with Mae Boren Axton did write the song.
I may Not have the spelling right but close.

Durden it is.

Here's a couple of pix of Tommy---from about 1948 when he played steel for Tex Ritter. Left to right: Rusty McDonald (of "Faded Love"), Spud Goodall, Tex, Boots Gilbert, Durden; and then about 10 years later with rockabilly Jimmy Franklin's band out of Detroit.

Decent singer too---look for a tune called "Hula Boogie" on youtube, with Herb Remington on steel.

Fascinating story, Andy. But it leaves ya hangin', don't it? I mean, did they ever catch him and prosecute him? We need the sequel!

Well, like we always say, if you're good at it, you can make literally tens of dollars playing the steel guitar. Wink But nooo! I had to get me a "day job"...

Mae Boren Axton was Hoyt Axton's mother. So, the circle is complete? Confused
