Hi: I’ve been limping along with this problem for several years. When I change strings and wind them back on, a couple of my tuners wiggle, and loosen the nut. I have GENTLY retightened the nuts, but it’s like only a couple threads are grabbing and they are starting to strip out. They all had a washer (see pic), and removing the washer gave me a couple more threads on one of the tuners, but on another on, the nut bottomed out into the tuner before grabbing the headstock. Any ideas?

Glen I had the same problem on my Franklin... there is a Grover "kit" of the washers and the piece that screws in as well which will do the trick ... I found that I had to carefully cut off a piece the threaded part a little so that it wouldn't bottom out (using a fine hacksaw) - that did the trick and I had more than enough of the thread to lock down the Grovers properly !
it's a bit hit and miss figuring out how much to cut off the thread - so buy a few extra's ! I found the kit in Aussie (but I am in NZ) ..
This link might help you guys in the US https://www.amazon.com/Parts-Kit-Grover-Bushings-Washers/dp/B00CLXJ2N0
These are the ones I got from Aussie - https://www.guitarparts.co.nz/tuning-machines/tuning-machine-parts/screw-in-style-tuning-key-bushings.html _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

I have the same problem with the Grovers on my Emmons Lashley LeGrande.
(I’m the original owner).
Very frustrating, but I’ve somehow persevered for years ... 🙄
I recall reading somewhere on here that it was a bad run of tuners, and that Grover will ‘make it right’.
It’s probably way past the ‘statute of limitations’ in my case, though I believe they offer a lifetime warranty. |

I had the same problem with my Emmons Lashley LeGrande.
They said it was a bad run of Grover tuners, they didn't have the name Grover stamped in on the front of the tuner. The new ones have there name on it. Problem solved. They said the bad run didn't have enough windings.
PS: not all the ones without the name on it have the problem. _________________ Sjaak Hollenberg

I would check with Grover as they have great customer service and I have had tuners replaced long out of warranty. |

Hi Paddy: What's your s/n? Mine's 161. I think I got it in '95.
After making a pile of measurements, I'm in contact with Grover, and they're working on it.
It's interesting, the keyhead thickness is not constant, and varies between 5.4mm at strings 1,10, 7.2mm at strings 2,3,8,9 amd 6.2mm at strings 4,5. _________________ Franklin D10 8&5, Excel D10 8&5. My late 82 Franklin had Sperzels. Paul said he couldn't get any Grover tuners at the time. Maybe a good thing. |

Update:
First Grover said the tuners weren't theirs, but then got back to me and said "whoops, they are 210C's before we put the Grover name on them, what do you need?". I took two tuners off and made some caliper measurements:
the keyhead thickness varied from 5.3mm (neck side) to 7.2mm (center) to 6.3mm (far side). One tuner bushing measured the stock 8mm, but the other bushing measured only 6.6mm. The Grover spec says the 210C will accommodate thicknesses from 5.97mm to 10.16mm, so it seems like Mr. Franklin needed to shave the bushing down a bit to get it to grab the keyhead on the thin side. Grover kindly sent me a bag of new bushings and washers and offered to replace the keyheads if I find they are stripped. I'll wait until my next string change and then take it apart. Maybe on the thin side of the keyhead I'll try using two washers rather than shortening the bushing. Anyway, Grover was very supportive and went to the trouble of asking me a lot of questions. _________________ Franklin D10 8&5, Excel D10 8&5. Both amazing guitars! My guitar was inconsistent in the keyhead measurements as well ... but I managed to get it all sorted and the Grovers are all screwed down tight! I took the opportunity to re-paint the insides of the keyheads black again too... there was a few chips and missing bits of paint so now it looks pretty much new again ... glad you have it sorted Glenn. _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9
