Hey all,

I’m looking for 15” speaker suggestions for my Peavey Vegas 400. The BW in it doesn’t hold up to higher volumes. Pre at 10 o clock and post at 2 o clock is when it looses it clarity and starts to sound like it’s ripped/ripping.

Thank you,

You probably just need to change out the"basket"(it's field replaceable, right?)It's easy-I even did one once on the road...

If you'd like to lighten that thing up a little, find an Eminence EPS-15c(I think that's the number)...

It's a bit lighter and sounds as much like a JBL D-130
as anything out there, but it's a 300 watt speaker...I use one every day and love it!

Hope this helps
SH

PS-switch those pre- and post- numbers...

If you want another speaker, go for it but before you toss out that speaker, follow Steve's advice and change your amp settings. If you have the pre way ahead of the post like that, it's going to give you a bad distortion from overdriving the front end. Always need to keep the post setting higher than the pre.

If you still have the ripping sound, pull the speaker out of the amp and maintenance the voice coil/coil gap. If the foam plug has deteriorated and gummed up the gap, you will get a distorted sound from the speaker.

Here's a link to a post for the speaker maintenance procedure.

Sorry, I was using the clock method of describing my settings. Pre usually between 3-5, and post is usually between 5-7.

I see. You may want to try the speaker coil/gap clean-up and see if it helps your condition. If you do that, you will be able to see the speaker model on the tag by the terminals, if you need to replace it and want the original model.

The neo mag speakers like the Eminence TT and Telonics etc. are getting a lot of love from players who are tired of lugging around heavy amps.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I will start with checking/replacing the foam. As always, you all are super helpful!

My apologies Foster. I must have read your initial post a dozen times and just didn't notice you were using clock position v. dial numbers. My bad. Embarassed

Old tired eyes, I guess. Anyway, best of luck whatever works out for you.

Foam inside was definitely loose and bouncing around in there. Thanks for tip and saving me from spending $220 on a new Emenence speaker (which I will probably do at some point anyways Cool ) I’ll crank the amp up tomorrow and give it a whirl.

Bump on this topic. I had bought a few years back a couple EPS 15C speakers. I never really did warm up to them. I had always been a JBL fan, and the K130 had been my personal favorite. I e eventually bought a Telonics 15 and liked it better. I’ve been using that in my twin for several years now. Due to recent back surgery I need to rethink and warm up to new lighter weight speakers. At Mike Skaggs recommendations i bought a Wheelhouse 150 and like it more than the TT12 I also own. Has anyone ever tried a Wheelhouse 200 (15”)? I think I am going to make a couple of adapter rings to put a 12” in a 15” hole.

My Vegas 400 was fixed right up by cleaning the voice coil like others have suggested. It doesn’t make it lighter but it sure sounded better!

Foster, I put a TT-15 in my LTD. Lightened the load a bit. Sounds good.
Steve, I just bought a Wheelhouse 200 and it didn't work for me. If you have an interest....It will be for sale
