Hi guys, I’m back to straight steel and have will play in a nice Western Swing band!

I have a very nice Clinesmith JM cast aluminum steel and now I try to find the perfect amp.

I have a cab with a Celestion Gold that I like and a Quilter 101 amp.

I like this setup but I tried a friend’s Princeton with 12 Celestion Blue and the tone was amazing! The only down side of the Princeton is the top low volume. 15 watt is not enough for the gigs, I need more about 40-50 watt.

Now I want the smooth high I can’t get with the Quilter 101.

Can you guys ca suggest me a great tube amp around 40-50 watt? Preferably a head that I can use with my Gold speaker and I don’t need reverb, I don’t like reverb.

Thanks!

If your Celestion is rated either 4 or 8 ohms, I would recommend an older tube Fender piggyback head, such as a Tremolux (my personal fave), Bandmaster, or Bassman. Or a Deluxe or Deluxe Reverb with your Celestion retrofitted in the cab.

A Tremolux or Vibrolux seems really perfect!

Would you prefer the 2 x 10 or a 12 with. Tremolux head?

I've always achieved the best results by pairing my Tremolux head with its intended 2 x 10 enclosed cabinet with its original CTS Alnicos. The beauty of those old Fender piggyback heads is you can easily experiment with various speakers and combinations of speakers as long as you don't stray too far away from their recommended 4-ohm load (with the exception of the Showman, which wants to see 8-ohms). Perhaps my favorite amp for lap steel is an older Silverface Musicmaster Bass Amp with a 12" Vox Bulldog from the late '60s, but at about 12 watts it's a tad underpowered for a full band with drums. With its volume control dimed, it's tonal nirvana.

I tried and bought this amp today! The EQ is a lot better than the 101 and finally get the tone I want!

And here i was, thinking "Showman". Nothing wrong with a little extra headroom Winking

So what happened to the Quilter Interblock 45?

A week prior to the Milkman you seemed pretty excited about it.

The Quilter work very well but it miss a little something and I found the Milkman locally and had to try it. The preamp tube of the Milkman give me that little warm that the Quilter can’t.
