Hey all
Anyone ever use a roller nut for behind the bar bends? I've been pondering one because the strings intermittently go out of tune. I've tried graphite. |

I made a Delrin nut for my National TriPlex to better accommodate the tuning changes. Per the recommendation of the late master-builder Tom Pettingill.

Interesting Bill. Do you think there's much of a sound difference between a metal and a delrin nut? To my mind it's unlikely, possibly only with the open strings, but there doesn't seem to be many steel guitars with non-metal nuts.
Also is wear a factor? |

If you always tune up to the note then the residual stress will be higher behind the nut... so when you pull, you won't be changing that residual stress difference.
Notice when you tune down to the note the string is looser behind the nut... when you pull on the string it will go flat since the friction across the nut is overcome and the loose portion behind the nut will tighten up. Since your hand with the bar rests on the strings, slightly pulling on the strings, tuning up to the note is the best practice. It also helps take up slop in the tuner gear train.
Pedal steels have both drop and raise, so they really must have roller nuts to have a hope of staying in tune. On my Stratocaster I can tune down to the note, then if I push on the vibrato bar, leaving the guitar out of tune, I can pull the bar quickly to put the stress back behind the nut, leaving the guitar in tune.
