I've been working on mixing this for a few days in tiny little increments. I played bass and lap steel on this track and the singer/guitarist and the fiddle player just sent me their files to be added in. I say that part so you know I only engineered part of this, but mixed it all. I've listened to it so many times now that I don't hear it clearly anymore. But, I'd like to get any constructive criticism you'd care to give. https://soundcloud.com/jimpolld/broken-spoke-engineering-mix20200803-2wav.

Hi Jim, mixing is subjective, so you may get 100 different takes on this. I like the tone of all the instruments (especially the steel). My first impression from a listen on computer speakers would be the vocals need to be louder. However as the song went on it seemed that the fiddle was overpowering everything else, if it was me I would back off volume on the fiddle a little, that might make the vocals and lead stand out a little more.

BTW, I really liked your take on Harvest Moon which played after this song.

Thanks Eric. I really do appreciate the feedback. I got some similar from the artist and a few people she knows and trusts their ears. I ended up panning the instruments harder and did indeed lower the fiddle overall on the final mix. Panning the instruments made the vocal pop out more as well. Thanks for the Harvest Moon take as well. Now I've just got to get someone to sing it! D is not my vocal key apparently. I still couldn't help myself.
