Both Home Depot and Pep Boys usually have a spring assortment section. You can usually find one that's close enough. Make sure the length and the diameter are very close, and remember that thinner wire in the spring will make the effort easier. Stock springs were stiffer than necessary, in most cases. |

Hi Paul. I still consider myself a Newbee (or is it Newbie?) steel player but I'm pretty mechanically inclined. Like Donny said. I successfully redued the effort needed for the E lowers on my MSA by going to lighter springs. Actually, I couldn't find any springs that were close at my Home Depot or Lowes but that may be because Columbus GA is not a real large city. However, my local Ace hardware had a pretty good selection. Diameter was no problem but I had to cut them to the length I needed. I was able to do it (with the lighter springs) but one needs to be real careful while bending the new end to avoid bodily harm!! I also (for safety) smoothed the new cut end with a Dremel before trying to bend it.
By the way, Donny, thanks alot for the date info on my MSA. |

Has anybody adapted adjustable springs to there MSA. I have been thinking about it,but not done it yet. Maybe a small piece angle bolted in the original spring mounting holes drilled for a allen head screw to go in the new springs.Just a thought. I also bought some springs at Ace Hardware but haven't put them on . Scott [This message was edited by Scott Howard on 28 December 2006 at 02:35 AM.] |

It could be done, Scott. The issue, though, is whether it would be worth the time and trouble. I agree that adjustable springs can be a handy feature, but I wouldn't call it a "must have", even on a new guitar. Generally, if you have a particular spring that's too tight, it's probably easier to just install a different spring. |
