I have been immersed in Hawaiian music again, but this time more so with '50s and '60s Hawaiian music.
Some of my favorites:
Hawaiian Shores - Barney and Jules
Alfred Apaka - My Isle of Golden Dreams
All-Star Hawaiian Band
Echoes of Hawaii - Benny Kalama (thanks Jeff)
The Best of Hawaiian Slack Key - Gabby Pahinui
Party Hulas - Genoa Keawe
Soft Hawaiian Guitars (I'm digging the steel of Barney with Wurlitzer electric piano. Might have to get my Wurly tuned up! Who is the 2nd steel player?)

Hukilau Hulas has always been a favorite of mine. I guess because it comes with "Hula Instructions Inside".
I also really like Music of Old Hawaii by the Sons of Hawaii.

I also got a Poss Miyazaki record which I dig, too, "Hawaiian Exotics." It's fun, almost in the way that Billy Mure LPs are.

The LP "Sonny" by Sonny Chillingwoth.
It's different from the CD "Sonny" by Sonny Chillingworth.
The LP has David Kelii on steel. The CD doesn't.
I also love all the old "Sons of Hawai'i" LPs because they have my favorite Feet Rogers on them.
But since I have between 7 to 800 Hawaiian LPs it's a little hard to narrow it down that much. |

Some excellent choices, Jeff. I haven't heard the Mahi Beamer, but I see I can purchase it online, which I will do.
I like the Lena Machado CD very much. There are even a few cuts with Sol Hoopii, if I recall correctly.

I really dig the little I've heard of Gabby's steel playing--I wish I knew more. Bill Wynne said the holy grail of Gabby's steel playing is on "A Leis of Songs From Sam", but I've only heard 2 cuts from that (exquisite playing, though!).

There is a Sunday Manoa Album called "Cracked Seed" on which Gabby plays steel on a couple of cuts.
Also on Ry Cooder's "Chicken Skin Music" he plays steel on a couple of cuts as well.

The Chicken Skin Music LP was very influential on me. I learned all Gabby's stuff note-for-note.

You can say that again!
I have a VHS tape "Gabby Pahinui,Family & Friends The Pahinui Bros. that has lots of great music and musicians at Gabbys house in Waimanalo,Peter Moon,Joe Gang,Atta,Palani Vaughn and Gabbys sons.Gabby plays Two songs on steel!Get it if you can! Nobody plays steel like Gabby.
