Ok... here's the question. I use a .014 for my E, and a .017 for my B. On my Emmons, tuning them open correctly works all the way up. On my old Franklin, the B needs to be flat open to be correct in the 12th fret area. First, why? Second, since the only option to correct this is to try a different string gauge, do I need a bigger or smaller B?

Sounds to me like one of the strings is defective in some way...meaning that it doesn't have the same diameter all the way across the string. This can be caused by debris on the string, or maybe a little corrosion.

At the 12th fret, both strings are simply an octave of the open note, and should be just as in tune as when open.....UNLESS there is something about the string that causes it to vibrate inconsistently. Try a new string on one or both positions. What you describe shouldn't happen if the strings are good.

and Merry Christmas, Mikey!!

Sounds like there's a flat spot on your roller nut.

This has happened consistently, for years, regardless of brand of string or position of roller in nut... any other suggestions?
