Has anyone installed/tried a Lawrence 710 on a GFI Ultra?

There's no mechanical pickup adjustment on a GFI and distance from strings is an issue with the 710's.

I have a used Ultra D-10 and it has an E66 on the E9th neck and the stock GFI II on the C6th.

My Franklin had 710's on it and although the E66 sounds OK I miss the 710 sound.

I've had a couple of PM's and one was the physical dimensions of the 710 which appears to be the same as the George L's and GFI II (which is made by George L's for GFI).

I've ordered the 710's and will report after getting them and installing them.

Thanks Jack. Look forward to hearing about
your experience on this fit. I've wondered how this 710 change on a GFI would sound myself. Stay well.

You may have to bench grind the mounting ears on both side of the pup and dremel out the screw holes or deill new holes before grinding down the ears if the holes dont match up

I'll report back when I get them. They must not be working in California as I haven't heard anything from them other than an automated order acknowledgement message, Wednesday the day I ordered them.

Any chance you got these yet and were able to install? Thinking of getting one for my GFI as well.

They were just mailed yesterday (Friday 6/5). Probably late next week before I get them as they were sent from Los Angeles and I'm in the Tampa Fl area.

710 wide mount base measurement: 3 31/32" long x 1 3/4",

25/32" high

Geo L seems a scooch shorter but mounting screwws seem to line up

Lawrence 710's arrived and they are installed and checked out. I still have to wire them to the neck selector switch (I'll do it tomorrow). Had to trim the side mounting plates slightly and I used the metal mounting rings from the George L's and GFI II pickups. Had to enlarge the rings, on the ends a little and square them up to fit the 710's. Probably didn't need the rings but with trimming the mounting plate on the 710's the rings make a better mechanical installation.

The new 710's do not have a cover over the pole pieces and they stick out the bottom of the pickup but in the case of the GFI that makes the pickups mount close to the desired distance from the strings. On the E9th, the distance from the 1st string to pickup is .14" and on the 10th string .17". The C6th is similar. I didn't notice any change in volume from the old pickups. There is a substantial (positive) tone difference from both the George L's E66 that was on the E9th neck and the GFI II on C6th. I had 710's on my Franklin and the 710's on the GFI are very close.

I'll check the sustain after I get the neck switch wired today. I have an "ON-ON-ON" switch to install instead of the factory ON-ON switch.

Finished wiring this morning. It was a hassle but I would do it again. I also added an ON-ON-ON neck switch and a new Switchcraft jack.

The sound is great. Clarity between strings, all same volume, no distortion, etc. Sustain appears to be very similar to the Franklin I had with 710's. The strings I have on are maybe two weeks at most, George L's. With the old pickups they sounded like old strings. With the 710's they sound like new strings.

Good reporting.
I've come to feel that pickup exchanges are about small increments and small sound balance differences. But never has a pickup change been more night & day for me than when I went from an E66 to a Bill Lawrence XR-16 in my old Carter (which differs from a 710...how? I don't know.)
The E66 must be a good match for certain guitars. Some people seem to like it.

There's a comment on the Lawrence web site that if you liked the 705 you will like the XR16.

The XR16 is suposed to have a little more mid range hump than the 710. The XR16 uses magnetic cylinders like the 710 as well. I think they sound diferent than 705 but out of all the rest of the BL they sound the kost like a 705
