Good Morning All,

I recently posted about getting my first pedal steel. I just wanted to ask if there is some prior knowledge or a good book to read about musical theories. I want to do some reading to better understand the instrument.

Thank you,
Eric

This, the Steel Guitar Forum is a great resource and YouTube as well. I've wished for a long time that there was a book that went through the history, evolution, names, dates ,why's and how's of this remarkable half machine instrument. Keep at it. "Seek and ye shall find"

I’d start by learning the Circle of Fifths.

Yeah, I'd second youtube. Go there and search Rick Beato Music Theory and look for the Basics videos. I've found Beato to have a good way of relating theory. Also, in a video you can hear what something sounds like which is what's important.
Beato uses guitar and piano to illustrate concepts but it's all the same 12 notes so it applies to Pedal Steel.

Mike Perlowin's book- Music Theory in the Real World- Mel Bay is concise and great and has a downloadable section for steel guitar as it relates to that.

"Prior Knowledge" would be a cool title for the eponymous steel player's album - or instructional course.
