Any of you guys change from using a .020 gauge string to a .018 gauge on your 6th string. What was the results, did you have to make any changes to the bellcrank and location of the pull rode at the finger end ??
How was the results?
Did you change back to using a .020 string?
Does Paul Franklin use a .018 on his 6th string? |

| A while ago I worked on a Carter, I think, that wouldn't pull the 6th string up to A. Turns out he had reversed the 5th and 6th strings when he strung it up, so he had a .020 on the 5th and a .018 on the 6th. All guitars are probably not the same but once I switched those strings it pulled to pitch. It might work for you, but I personally use a .020 or .022 plain on my 6th and would think a .018 would sound way too thin. |

If he uses the gauges he selected for "his" set of D'Addario NYXL strings (the "medium" set), he uses an .018 for the 5th string and a .020 for the 6th. |

| I also use a 22 plain as in the BE E9 string set from SIT. I like the tone and it works on 5 different steels I have owned. |

I do the same.
I drop my G# to F# and on some pedal steels you can't make that change with a wound string.

Ive used a .020 Plain for decades on several different guitars and it works a treat for my setups. 6th lower, and split!, Franklin pedal etc ..

| I went to a .022w many years ago with my MSA Mill to cure a 6th string tuning issue, and it has worked perfectly allowing the full tone drop. However, I had to relocate the bell crank’s pull hole for timing of the other pulls on the same lever and extend the knee lever stop. The only negative factor is that I don’t like the long knee lever travel feel compared to the feel when using a plain .020 string. |

When I built my first uni I tried a 22W because I liked it on the D10, and I made sure it would lower ok.
But it was also the 4th string of the B6 tuning and didn't sound right so I went plain. No big deal. In fact I think the sound I liked on the D10 had a lot to do with the single-coil pickups

I enjoy the sound of a plain better, but on some steels the unpredictable intonation has caused me to go with a wound string on 6. Jim Palenscar has been able to make the G# to F# work in my case.
