This is a shot at Buddy Cage's steel break on "Hello Mary Lou". I took it off the New Riders of the Purple Sage "Powerglide" album. This was a lot of work...Buddy is absolutely smoking on this one! If you can't play it at speed, no problem - I can't either! I thought it was an interesting look at one of Buddy's "walk-ups" though and it's a fun speed-picking exercise. I tried a few different options but the 2nd and 4th string combo seems to make the most sense. Think of the walk-up as two groups of triplets with the accent on the first beat (I marked it with an arrow on the tab). Also notice he skips the 14th fret on the way up - this makes everything come out right with the band at the top. Enjoy and let me know if you have corrections or a slicker way to play it.
Here it is on youtube...the break starts about 1:45

Thanks for the kind words, guys - I hope the tab is close. There's a bunch of us on the Forum whose "formative years" were when country rock was just starting to explode on the music scene. Buddy Cage's pedal steel sure got my attention! RIP Buddy. |
