I got a milkman The Amp about a year ago and love it. It’s become not just my steel amp, but my main amp for gigging and recording.
Lately it would have been really handy to have a tube pre for some recording I’m doing. I’ve wondered about getting a Sarno Black Box. I’m curious how the black box stacks up against the milkman for recording direct.
I’m also curious if anyone has tried to use the Sarno as a mic preamp, and if that’s even really possible. I like the idea of getting one if I could use it for both functions well. |

What have you tried? DI and miked cab, different lower gain tubes?
You can look into tube channel strips, there aren't many under $500 and some will not run a guiar input thru the preamp stage (only comp/EQ). This is a reasonable facsimile of a channel strip if you don't want to buy a dbx 676 https://www.presonus.com/products/studio-channel
I always have to say, if you open up the Milman:
DON'T TOUCH POWER CAPS!!! _________________ - keyless Sonny Jenkins laps stay in tune forever!; Carter PSG

The Amp and The Amp 100 are both high voltage tube preamps. They allow you to take a guitar input and convert it to a balanced line level output with tube gain and EQ. You can run the XLR output of The Amp into a line input on your recording system and thats it. No need for any additional products to get that done |
