It's a matter of taste and circumstances. On the E9 neck, I personally like to play the melody along with a harmonizing note if the song is in a moderate to slow tempo. So, for example, I might play a phrase of the melody on the fifth string, simultaneously picking the eighth string below, applying the A pedal to string five and the E-lowering lever to string eight as needed. Likewise I might use string six or three against the melody on string five, applying the B pedal as needed.
Faster songs are sometimes better approached one string at a time. If you are adding harmony behind another instrument or voice, playing full chords might be in order (three strings, four if you use a third finger pick), but often two strings is more appropriate there as well.
Having said all that, every moment of every song has to be treated for the context and taste of the player and the band/singer: there are no hard a fast rules (not even any soft and slow ones). |
