I have to replace two of the four 10†alnico speakers in a 1969 Super Reverb. Anybody have suggestions from experience for ceramic speakers that would work well for pedal steel? They would need to be 8 ohm and, if I can afford it, I would replace all four. _________________ 2008 Zum D-10, 1996 Mullens PRP D-10, 1974 Emmons D-10, 1976 Emmons D-10, early 70s Emmons GS-10, Milkman Sideman head w/Telonics 15" speaker, 1966 Fender Super Reverb, 1970 Fender Dual Showman head, Wechter/Scheerhorn and Beard Dobros, 1962 Supro lap steels, Gibson 1939 RB-11 banjo, Gibson 1978 RB-250

I'd be curious to hear responses as to replacing only two speakers. My brain would want 4 same/same speakers, but never thought about it. I bought a new 1964 Super Reverb in 1964..wish I still had it. |

I'd consider two of these from Weber...

I've used this speaker in Princeton Reverb, and it's got the Fender surf/twang tones for Telecaster and steel guitar. Have played PSG through mine, at reasonable volumes.
I'd also consider leaving the two old alnico speakers in place, as the blended sound may be very pleasing to your ears. This is not uncommon in the six-string world. |

I don't have a specific speaker recommendation.
However I endorse the idea of only replacing two at first. Lots of guitar players will mix speakers and if you're having to work within the limitations of 10" speakers it might not be a bad thing to have speakers emphasizing different frequencies.
Less speakers to resell if for some reason you don't like the new ones, a good chance you might like the mix, and you can always buy two more of you don't like the mix. _________________ Nickel and Steel. Sad Songs and Steel Guitar.

Update:
While I'm waiting for two NOS Eminence 1028 alnicos to arrive that would match the original two non-blown speakers,
I installed two ceramic Fender Eminence 10" speakers from another non-Super Fender 410 amp I have in the '69 Super. Sounds pretty good but I've noticed that to get a really close sound to my '66 Super with ceramics the eq settings on the '69 are radically different. I understand that there's some natural variation between pots, and the chassis are different, but these settings for the same overall sound are much higher. Not really a problem, just an interesting observation.
