I want to replace the existing pickup in my SX-8 with the alumatone bass bar 3.5
I also would like to change the pots. What value pots would be best?

Thanks

Lace recommends 250k pots.

I haven't changed the pots in mine, but I have that same rig, SX8 with 3.5 bass bar. I love the combination, but you are right to want to experiment with the pots (and possibly capacitor values). When I dial back the tone on mine it feels like I'm just sucking volume away, not treble as much. So the stock pots don't mate that well with this pickup to my ear, I just haven't tried a bunch of other options yet. I think first stop (for me) is capacitor values.

That said the pairing has great tone on the low end, very clear. This is not a great recording but is one of the few I've done with the SX and I like how it does the low chord voicings in B11: https://soundcloud.com/tropicstrings/sand

Yeah! The tone and the playing is great. The whole Tropic Strings combo is authentically cool. BTW, Nic, nice ending. Really shows off the bass in the pickup.
p.s. Nice job on Sleepwalk too. P’tah anyone!
Steve

This is what I heard from Lace when I asked about the difference between the Tone Bar and the Bass Bar (particularly in light of how much more expensive the former was):

Quote:
Hello Nic and thank you for your email. Prior to the Tone Bar, pedal steel players were using the Bass Bar pickups in their instruments and we were getting rave reviews from them. The Tone Bar pickups have a little more top and mid, but nothing you cannot dial in with your amp. I say, stick that puppy in your pedal steel and start making noise.

The "Tone Bar", from what he implies, may have a bit more top end but I bet they are fairly similar overall...build very similarly.
