Hello, I have an E9 "Beck Musical Instruments" S-10, 3 pedal / 3 lever setup.
Seems most steels have 4 levers. Should I look into adding a RKR?

Bear in mind, I'm still a beginner. Ultimately I want to get a D-10, so that I can experiment with C6 tuning for western swing (once I'm ready).

Any advice?

Darren
How is yourBMI setup emmons or day??
I had one 30 years ago I think mine was 3+4
My RkR lowered my 2nd string a 1/2 then a whole
And the 9th string a whole tone. The 9th was a half stop. You can do a lot with 3+3 for right now but, if you want to add another knee lever parts are available at BMI ...

Hi Paul,

Mine's setup like this:

A Pedal = Strings 10 & 5 up a whole step
B Pedal = Strings 6 & 3 up a half step
C Pedal = Strings 5 & 4 up a whole step
LKL = Strings 8 & 4 up a half step
LKR = Strings 8 & 4 down a half step
RKL = Half Stop String 2 down a half step, Full Stop Strings 9 & 2 down a whole step.

You have everything there that you need, albeit that the moves done on RKL are usually done on RKR.

If you want to become more mainstream, put a RKR on it and move everything from RKL to RKR, then maybe lower the 6th string a full tone with RKL

Ok
Then your RkR raise 7th and 1st a half tone
Or raise 1st a whole tone. Another way
Lower 6th a whole tone many ways you can work the RKR. Hope this helps

Since you're a beginner, I'll just say you needn't worry about having 4 levers instead of 3. More pedals and levers do not make a better player, practice does. Winking

You can do a LOT with what you have now. Your time would be much better served by really digging in and learning the setup you already have. The half stop raise on string 1 can be done Old School with a finger on your bar hand. I’d consider adding string 7 F#-G# on that right knee. It’s an idea that never really caught on, Bobbe Seymour’s “Z Lever”. I think its a cool idea in a case like yours.

Ok, thanks everyone. Wasn't sure if I was missing something by not having a 4th knee lever. I'll look into moving my RKL to RKR, and adding a RKL to raise 7th and 1st a half tone if that's the standard setup. I'd imagine that won't be too expensive.

I've owned my PSG for almost 15 years now, but haven't made much progress until recently. I started thinking of every interval I'm playing, and that seems to have helped me better understand the instrument. By thinking in intervals, rather than patterns, I feel I'm starting to get a better grasp on the layout of the instrument.

The proper right hand technique still confounds me, but I'm going with what exercises I can find from Jeffran tabs. Considering buying some of the Franklin lessons, since he seems to have the most agreed upon method.

I've since been informed that BMI made no "student" models. They're all pro! So that good to hear.

BMI is an excellently designed and well made guitar. I had a Universal 12 string for many years.

Thank you for sharing that. I wasn't aware of any student model guitars built by BMI.

Gene, I believe you're talking about Dan Burnham. His contact info is on BMI's website as well.
