What are folks using for getting together w friends on the web and recording w video- not necessarily professional but having fun? Some folks I'm playing with are using Acapella but I'm looking for alternatives w more power (mixing, etc).

Jim, are you asking about playing together in real time? I didn't think Acappella did that at all. As far as I know, it's just useful for making video collages (virtual band or virtual choir, etc.). For that sort of thing, I've just finished editing a song from my wife's 16-voice choir. Acappella was too limited for this job. Each person recorded his/her part on their own cellphones while listening thru headphones to a basic track and then I cropped, edited and mixed it all using Audacity for audio and VideoPad for video. Lotta folks use Adobe Premier Pro for the video part.
Now for playing together in real time, there are services like JamKazam and Jamulus but they all suffer from latency problems, though some people do get satisfactory results and others don't. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

Jim,
Have you tried Jamulus? Seems to work pretty well and it very easy to set up a private server so you can include only the people you want.

Mark, I've tried Jamulus with one band member and while it sounded together to me, it sounded way off to him. Not sure why. Would love to get the bugs out of it if possible. Have used JamKazam in past but also flaky. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

Jim,
It may be the type of interface that is being used by all the players. I have on friend that just listens to his computer speaker and is not happy. My other friends like the overall the sound that they get.
Have not used JamKazam though.

Mark, our issue hasn't been sound quality; it has been latency. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

Here is a report about using Jamulus. It may provide you a few tips.

I find the latency from my soundcard to be too much for me when recording so I use direct monitoring of what I am playing so I would not get on well with even the lowest levels of latency reported. I have been doing some remote collaborating (audio/video - each part recorded separately) but wouldn't even attempt to do any live online playing with anyone.
As far as I know, even professional studios with dedicated high speed connections haven't managed to crack live playing from remote locations. |

I've tried several different apps now including Reaper but generally find them either way more than I was wanting/needing or not able to do much editing (simple stuff like punch in/out or re-record) and the folks I play with like video as well so still looking. Thanks for the replies! |

I would suggest using one of the too big ones like reaper. Ignore the parts you don’t use. Maybe have somebody help you set up a template and a work flow. It is just one of those things you need to learn if you are going to do it. It is way more easy than playing steel guitar ! _________________ Bob |

Also once you are working in Reaper or whatever if you have a problem don’t spend more than 10 minutes on it on your own. Go straight to the help forums and the dreaded YouTube. All the information will be there and can be easily found with just a little patience. _________________ Bob |

I’ve been using Acapella and it has mixing/processing capabilities including extensive EQ, compression, reverb, delay, etc. Maybe you missed it, but there is a decent flexibility under the hood. However, it is not straightforward and can be a little time-consuming. It is essentially multitrack video recording. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |
