Hey y'all, new here and to lap steel as a whole. I picked up a 30s or 40s recording king steel before going into isolation as something to fix up and mess with.
I'm pretty stumped by the pickup. It didn't work when I got it so I set about rewiring it, but have no information to go off of, and the wiring was disconnected in spots when I got it.
I saw one post on here from years ago with a similar instrument/electronics, that's about all the info I've been able to find on this thing. Any help (like maybe a wiring diagram) would be very appreciated. I'll try to attach photos of it all. Thanks in advance!

The wiring of the pots looks OK.
Reversed from normal practice with the input to the wiper kinda like a Jazz bass but thats ok.
I can only see one wire coming from the pickup, it may be relying on ground contact with the plate which looks to be pretty corroded. I'd check that first _________________ Duesenberg Fairytale

Yeah, I can only see one wire from the pickup, which I assume to be the lead. I figured the ground would come from the second magnet being screwed to the metal cover. I get straight up buzz anytime I've tried wiring this. I'll look at cleaning these magnets if you think that should help?
This current wiring, shown with the fresh 500k pots and blue cap, was me trying my best to retrace the wiring as best as I could see from the old harness and its broken solder joints. |

You have one end of the coil connected, see if you can find the other end or check with a multimeter to find resistance from the live wire to ground rather than open circuit or the 250 or 500k of the pot _________________ Duesenberg Fairytale

I really can't see another wire from the coil I could use as a ground. cleaned out the pickup cover and nothing much changed. multimeter readings from the lead wire and any ground source are scattered and don't stay in one place. |

I don't have any experience with this pickup, but basically a pickup coil has a start end and a finish end.
The finish end is your live, which you have connected to your pot terminal.
The start end must somehow be connected to the ground terminal on the output jack. In "modern" wiring setups this is generally achieved by connecting it to a wire which is soldered to the back of the volume pot (and then connected to the jack)
In your situation that ground connection MAY be achieved at the pickup by connecting to the body of the pickup, which is then attached to the metal mounting plate which then connects to the pot where it is fastened on.
Furter disassembly, checking and cleaning of contact surfaces may be required, If that fails you may be up for a rewinding. _________________ Duesenberg Fairytale
