Just finished recording this lovely song in the B11th tuning using a 6 string Magnatone steel.

what's cool is your two steel tracks, one for melody the other backing you up. I need to work on my backing skills, I think that is tougher than melody, or maybe it simply requires more knowledge of the chord progression of the song. Would love to hear how other approach backing the melody or singer on their steel guitar. _________________ Steve Marinak |

I agree it is a tricky and underappreciated thing in Hawaiian steel guitar...all the masters could do it well but it's not the kind of thing you typically read about in a course or lesson. My teacher spent a lesson with me focused on it recently...I've got a long way to go, but fills, vamps...playing in the "puka" (holes)... I've gotten some practice playing with a group with a vocalist doing jazz numbers, too...comping the easier chord changes. If I was good enough with the tuning, B11 is great for that...lots of chordal options. But my fluency remains with C13 for that kind of stuff.
I did this about a year ago after my teacher taught me his arrangement: https://soundcloud.com/nicneufeld/hana-paradise-found-b11 _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling

Paul -
No, old song.
You'll hear it played at most the Hawaiian Steel Conventions. |

The first time I think I heard it was this performance by Margie Mays: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8-fgpwxmoc
You'll see it billed as Paradise Found, too.
Other recordings include:
Charles "Kaipo" Miller Serenaders - The Heart of Hawaii, 1961. I think if I recall Kaipo Miller's father wrote the tune. This is one of the somewhat rare vocal versions (because yeah, it has become a bit of a steel guitar tune!)
Maile Serenaders - Evening in the Islands (Barney Isaacs and Eddie Pang on steel, I think Nina K. doing brief vocal snippets on each song), 1965.
And one of the best in my opinion if you like a dose of exotica...The Fantastic Strings of Felix Slatkin - Paradise Found (title track). Jules Ah See on steel guitar. _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling

Aloha Derrick and thanks for that lovely rendition of Hana. I first heard that tune at my first HSGA convention where Duke Ching played a beautiful version of it on his quad and it really struck a chord (no pun intended) with me, |

Aloha Derrick,
That was a nice arrangement of Hana, nice plush chords and that instrument has a nice tone. As the braddahs say, "nahenahe."
My Isle of Golden Dreams sounds great in B11th. Give it a try. |

Aloha Don,
Good to hear from you. Hope you are doing fine.
I miss the conventions with the old gang. Those were fun times. I getting to like the Magnatone sound more and more. What great steels they are. I'll have to look into that song for B11th. Thanks,
Aloha from Hawaii |
