I don't know if he'd be willing, but Jeff Garden writes really good steel tabs.
Nice tune with a reggae sound. What tuning do you play?

Interesting. That melody is Tradition from Fiddler On The Roof. |

The bandleader of the Skatalites at that time was Jackie Mittoo, a keyboard & organ prodigy who was raised by musically educated parents with a broad range of interests.
He was instrumental in developing some of the most classic rhythms that are still played in dancehalls today. He'd layer his interpretations of popular melodies over those rhythms, teach the parts to the horn section and off they'd go.
The guitar intro is by Ernest Ranglin, a finely trained world-class jazz guitarist with deep roots in the reggae community from starting days in the late 1950's to right now (check out his deep cut on the brand new Clinton Fearon album). Somebody more versed in jazz guitar will have to break that one down for you, sorry!
If you like reggae versions of classic tunes, the Skatalites have a TON of them. |

Ranglin? Man, I shoulda known. It is good to hear he's still active. Sweet, sweet player.
Check out the stuff he has recorded with Monty Alexander for a real Jamaican treat.
Okay, the first phrase is basically a D minor arpeggio, A, F, D, A with chord tone harmony to land on A7#5#9. Sounds like he's playing 3, #5 and #9.
Second phrase outlines D min 9 (A, F, E, C) on the way to A7#5 voiced b7, 3, #5, 1, ( G, C#, F, A low to high) I think.
Fun music, that.
Cheers, CR. _________________ Excel Superb U12, MIJ Squier tele, modified Deluxe Reverb RI, Cube 80XL, self built acoustics & mandolins |
