I got the urge to mess with a tune from one of my favorite records, Larry Young’s “Unityâ€. The song is called Zoltan and composed by the great Woody Shaw. I created the backing track and experimented with some harmony, but this is really just for me to practice along with to get it gig-worthy.
Do you like to hear lap steel in this context? I feel like it’s what I’ve been working towards the whole time.
I played my walnut Clinesmith on this track. I like the tighter string spacing for picking.

you wont get many wedding reception gigs playing it...., but i enjoyed hearing it. love the mellow buzz sound. tell us what you used to get that sound. this kind of material needs to be heard more on the non pedal steel. you are carving yourself out quite a nice niche doing these tunes. |

Thanks for your comments.
Bill, between the ages of 22 and 45, I played more than 1,500 weddings. I’d be happy to never play another!
This is the music that inspires me and always has. If I could just find someone in jazz who takes lap steel seriously to put me to work.... _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Mike - You take the instrument to places most us could not imagine. I like where you’re going.
An organ and Larry Young reminds me of hearing him, John McGlaughlin and Tony Williams at a club in NY in 1970. It was exhilarating, but so loud my ears were ringing for days; in fact, they still are.
Thanks. |

This is great Mike! For whatever it is worth, you have inspired me (and many others I am fairly certain) many times over. Thank you for really taking the instrument seriously and being bold with making music. More on topic: this is great! (I guess I already said. Ah well.) |

I want to thank you for taking the time to listen and comment.
Ralph, that was one of the best bands of all-time. Tony, John and Larry are all some of my favorite musicians. Lucky you!
Daniel, I appreciate it. I do take music very seriously but truthfully, I don’t have to depend on it for a living. Doing that would prevent me from really doing what I love. I had enough of that in the past, now it’s about following my heart. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Hi, Mike...nice job. I think your on to something. It reminds me of Jeff Beck connecting with his inner Allan Holdsworth. Pretty unique and innovating for non pedal steel...Keep it up, I for one would be interested to see where you take it. Cool... |
