Seems like I've seen some posts like this here before. I recently recorded some steel parts for a friend's hastily put together tour EP (it was all done in one day in an apartment). I've only been playing about 2.5 years, and this is the first thing I've done that's been released into the wild. I think this track turned out the best:

If you use Spotify and can therefore listen to the track, I'd love to get some feedback from the community. I'm all ears to whatever constructive criticism I can get. The aim here is to identify areas for improvement, so don't hold back .
Thanks! |

You did a great job! For 2.5 years. That was excellent!!! Your tone color was great for the material you were backing. You did not over play which was great. You complimented the band and the material great. You played in tune, which was great. No suggestions. Well organized. |

Barry, I'm not sure the link sent me to the correct track in Spotify. What's the name of the band and song? |

The "band" is called Golden Shoulders. The song is called Jay Never Felt More Alive.
Thanks for giving it a go. |

Hey Barry!
Sounds great man, so tasteful and perfect for the songs.
There's no way anything I was playing 2.5 years in sounded that polished. Nice job, love the harmonics.

The steel sounds just fine, but the band needs a new drummer and new singers |

Nice music and tasteful playing. If you are looking for things to improve on as a steel player I would look at your left hand. It sounds like you are clutching the bar too hard. I had a big problem with that when I was getting going. I'm guessing that is a problem because you have the same intonation issues I had as well as a forced and tense sounding vibrato.
For the right hand I'm hearing an uneven attack on different strings. This could come from having your hand in a fixed position like resting the heel of your palm on something. Are your shoulders tense when you play ? Does your elbow stick out ? Do you hold your breath while you play ?
Overall though sounding really good. Keep up the good work. I really liked the song and the band. You guys have something deep going on. _________________ Bob |

Now we're talkin. Thanks for this input, Bob. I'm always on the lookout for new exercises and drills I can give myself. I'll definitely spend some time on the bar grip and the pick attack.
I do think I tense up when playing in front of others more than when practicing at home. It's getting better with time, but also something to work on. You've got me thinking about running through a round of my current routine while focusing on breathing. |

I think you sound good in a classic steel guitar way. Very good use of the vol pedal in terms of an "invisible" attack. I would try to syncopate a little more; start some phrases on the offbeats, the "ands." You use the pedals well to move between chords in the song; now try little approach phrases that start on a chord on the "and" of beat 3 , then resolve to the next chord on the beat in the next measure right before you use the pedals to go to the next chord. I saw Larry Campbell recently and he was always moving to the next chord so when he hit the actual chord on the beat it really made you hear the harmony of the song. You've got the 2 note harmony thing going well. Be proud and don't be afraid to start a phrase while the singer is finishing one, especially when you've got the vol pedal going so well. |
