I've been playing an Emmons Legrande II (D-10) since 1994 and I'm starting to give some thought to trying something new. I live in the Austin area, and I'd really like to buy from someone who knows how to fix what they've sold. So, anyone have any advice about the following:
What brands of pedal steels should I be looking at?
Are they're any good steel shops around Central Texas? and
Are they're any steel mfgs in Dallas/Houston/San Antonio/Austin area? (I know Carter has his plant in the Dallas area, what about Carter steels?)
Thanks for any help you can give.

Joel, Carter steel guitar and MSA are both around the Dallas area. I have both a Carter D-10 and a MSA Millennium M3. Both are excellent guitars.

They're all very good but I highly recommend the RAINS STEEL GUITARS as suggested by Fred...incredible sustain and tone plus Gary Carpenter is one heck of an incredible repairman.

In the Dallas/Ft.Worth area you could buy a Carter,MSA,Rains or GFI. I own a GFI and really like it. I'd like to have one by the other builders in that area too.

Joel is there any chance you could test drive a steel? that would really help your decision, I really don't know how far you are to these places. Another thing to consider is how long do you want to wait? I honestly can't wait to long so 2 plus years is way to much. I have a Carter d10 '06 The wait time was only part of the reason I bought it, the thing really plays smooth. But do yourself a favor and test 'em, I would say that all of the companys listed above (in texas)can fix what they sold

About the wait time: Whe I ordered my Millennium last janary, I was told to expect it in mid June, and that's when I got it. I don't know what the wait time is today, but the good folks at MSA gave me a realistic etimate, and stuck to their timetable.

You allready have an Emmons, I think that's as good as you can get.
I would keep playing that one, if it has some issues, have it adjusted by someone.
I know I'm boring......

Joel, I play a GFI Ultra D-10 and I love it! After playing an Emmons student model S-10 for four years, I switched to GFI. I think GFI makes a good steel. There are so many good steels out there. I think the GFI is the best guitar I've ever played. It stays in tune very well and the tone is really amazing and the pedal action is great too. GFIs are built in Arlington Texas.
